Kennedy Country
The village of Hyannis in the town of Barnstable, (named for Iyanough, the Native American Sachem who welcomed early settlers) gained prominence during the Kennedy Presidency. His presence is stamped indelibly on this village: from the Kennedy Memorial with its Presidential Seal, to the white-steepled St. Francis Xavier Church, to the secluded Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport. The harbor is a bustle of activity, as it is homeport to ferries to the islands, harbor cruise boats and fishing vessels. The economic hub of Cape Cod, Barnstable serves as the county seat. Proud sea captains’ homes line the historic Old King’s Highway. Pristine beaches and windswept dunes off Sandy Neck reach into Cape Cod Bay. The wealth of the China trade in the 18th century makes Yarmouth an architectural historian’s dream. Shipbuilding made Dennis famous during the Golden Age of Sail, and its salt works were vital to America’s survival during the Revolutionary War.
